This report was published by Banca Intesa in October 2006. It examines the relationship, mainly at local level, between the role of public intervention and growth trends and the economic prosperity of local communities. The analysis looks at critical factors in the Italian economy and outlines the strong and weak points of public sector intervention in Italy on the basis of the current supply of services to citizens and enterprises and the current budget structures of local government authorities. The report also makes comparisons with other international experiences and examines the connection between international competitiveness and decisions to decentralise economies
